In order to troubleshoot and maintain your computer follow these simple steps:

Disk Defragmenter
Disk clean up
Windows Update
Check/Scan disk
Close unwanted Programs

Maintaining stability:

Disk Defragmenter- this tool puts all of your files back into place. For example, when you buy the board game monopoly all of pieces and money are packaged all nice and neat. After playing the game several times everything is all messed up. Well your computer is the same way. Defragmenter will put all of the pieces back into their original package. This should be performed every couple of weeks.

To Perform:
click on start->
programs->
accessories->
system tools->
Disk defragmenter->
drive C->
Start

Disk clean up- The disk Clean up should be performed weekly and will delete all of your unused and unwanted files. it will also delete your garbage and old internet files.

windows update- Windows update will ensure that your computer is up-to-date with new features and the latest security.
To Perform:
Click start->
windows update->
on web site go to scan for critical updates->
download updates->
install updates and follow directions

Check disk-the check disk fixes your computer when you are having problems/errors. This should be run every week just to ensure that you computer is error free even if you are not having any problems.

open up my computer->
right click on C drive->
select properties->
click the tools tab->
select check disk->
check all boxes->
answer yes that you will perform the next time system starts->
restart computer and check disk will check computer

Closing programs
Press ctrl+alt+delete

Before installing any software perform this:

system restore
To Perform:
click on start->
programs->
accessories->
system tools->
system restore->
set restore point for today ->
click ok->

install your program now

Common problems and solutions:

If these solutions do not work you may possibly have a virus and may need to run an antivirus program

Too many programs begin at startup
To get rid of them:
click start->
click run->
type msconfig->
click ok->
go to startup on the top tab of the pop up screen->
unclick programs that you do not use->
click apply->
click ok->
Restart your computer

Disk Defragmenter isnt working properly or is taking too long

It is common for disk defragmenter to take a long time. It can even take 12-24 hours. If you are having trouble running defragmenter then you should close all of the programs running on you computer except explorer.exe. After this you should shut off your screensaver and power saving features (if they are turned on). Next you want to try running the defragmenter over night. When you wake up in the morning the defragmenter should be finished.
